Typography and Design
Typography is a fascinating art form that embodies design in its purest essence. I have always been drawn to the whimsical intrigue of letters and their forms. Over the years, I've enjoyed working on several projects, collaborating with the Dedham Historical Society, the talented artist Walter Horak, various authors, and events in Newport. Each endeavor allowed me to explore the beauty of type, transforming ideas into visually striking narrative designs.
"All Maps Lie"
The text reflects on Paula Scher's article “All Maps Lie” and celebrates the author’s childhood experiences with maps, viewed through her father's work as a civil engineer specializing in photogrammetry. Scher shares how, as a child, she was captivated by the aerial maps her father created, unveiling the beauty of familiar places in their neighborhood. However, understanding the concept of distortion and relating the map to dishonesty presents challenges for those constructing houses, roads, and bridges—asserting that “All maps are distorted; they are not literal fact.” Ultimately, Scher’s experiences illuminate the profound complexities of perception, truth, and representation in both maps and life. This article inspired me to return her text and words into a design of literal form, portraying a map, bold lines, and a symmetrical balance of truth and lies to honor her work and her father.
Non-profit designs:
Non-profit designs aim to feature a striking image that delivers an immediate and powerful message. Its clean and straightforward design captures attention while ensuring clear communication. Using vibrant colors and an eye-catching typeface was intentional, aiming to draw the viewer's eye. Each design element was meticulously chosen to maximize visibility and ensure the message could be easily understood and shared.
